City manager Tungate briefed the Oak Park Planning Commission on the city's six-year capital improvement plan and asked members to review fiscal year 2026–27 funding in the budget packet. Tungate said the plan includes water and sewer projects, street maintenance, and funds for both marked and unmarked police vehicles.
Tungate highlighted public safety needs, saying, "We estimate the cost for a new fire truck engine... to be about $1,300,000," and that the manufacturer indicated roughly a two-year waiting period to order one. He said city staff is exploring financing options to accelerate the purchase and estimated that, if financed at about 6% interest, payments could be in the $120,000-per-year range.
Commissioners asked questions about timing and whether the commission needed to take action at this meeting given the lack of quorum; Tungate and staff clarified that the CIP presented to the commission is not the final version and will be submitted to the City Council on May 18. Tungate said he would include a financing request in the next fiscal year's budget if a pathway to earlier purchase is identified.
Tungate also noted the city previously received a federal earmark that helped pay for a prior fire vehicle and reiterated staff's availability to answer follow-up questions about project details.
