The Sunnyvale Sustainability Commission voted on March 16 to consolidate three proposed event topics into a single waste‑reduction fair and adopted a two‑year speaker‑series ranking the commission will forward to city council for approval.
Environmental Services staff presented attendance and registration trends for the speaker series since 2017, noting that post‑pandemic patterns and topic selection have produced variable turnout. Care, the environmental programs manager, told the commission the department plans to experiment with fewer, more interactive in‑person events and to present a two‑year program package to the council instead of an annual approval cycle.
"We're going to do fewer events over a longer time frame," Care said, explaining the staff proposal to prioritize topics and formats that better align with staff capacity and community engagement goals.
Commissioners discussed six proposed topics and formats — including a climate‑messaging workshop, a waste‑reduction fair (which would include food and plastics elements), a resilience hub workshop, a cross‑generational climate roundtable, and other community fairs and workshops. Vice Chair Pistone and other commissioners proposed sequencing that pairs targeted workshops to build capacity with a community fair aimed at broader public outreach.
After deliberation, Commissioner ***** moved to combine the "all about plastics" and the food fair topics with the waste‑reduction fair; the motion was seconded and passed on a roll call vote of five yes to zero no with two absent. Miss Raby conducted the roll call. The commission then ranked the prioritized topics and approved the rankings to send to council; the top three items were: waste reduction (No.1), sustainability and climate messaging (No.2), and the cross‑generational climate roundtable (No.3).
Staff said the environmental services department will coordinate dates, venues and logistics if council approves the proposed two‑year plan and that many of the proposed events would be recorded when feasible to provide an ongoing resource. The approved rankings will be included in a staff report to council for final approval.
