Council pins and combines truck-route studies, approves $2M traffic-calming allocation

Transportation and public-works items drew sustained attention during the executive session.

Members discussed a $300,000 study focused on Stellantis facilities (line 17) and multiple district-level truck-route requests. Several councilmembers proposed combining related district asks into a single $1,000,000 citywide truck-route study; council pinned the line so DPW could provide a firm scope and a consolidated dollar amount. Member Santiago Romero and Member Callaway argued for citywide coverage to address widespread truck traffic in commercial corridors.

The council approved a $50,000 one-time allocation for bike racks (line 20) and approved a $1,000,000 Chinatown streetscape and sidewalk-repair request (line 21). Corley noted many DPW items are listed as non-general street-fund spending and recommended discussion with DPW Director Brundage to confirm funding sources and avoid tapping general-fund dollars where other street funds are available.

On traffic calming, Pro Tem Coleman A. Young II advocated for a $2,000,000 minimum viable investment for speed humps, chokers, paint and corridor redesigns; cost estimates ranged from a few thousand dollars for a speed hump to $500,000–$2,000,000 per mile for corridor redesign. The council moved $2,000,000 into line-item 35 as a one-time allocation and placed complementary language into the closing resolution.
