The superintendent told the Bayonne School District board the district will join a nationwide lawsuit against major social-media companies over alleged harms to students.
Introducing Resolution C11, the superintendent said districts across the country have filed suits focused on the effects of social media on youth, and that some cases allege platform algorithms can produce addiction and emotional distress. He said the district’s planned participation would be at no cost to the district and that the law firms handling the litigation would keep the district informed.
The superintendent referenced public-health guidance in describing the rationale, telling trustees the U.S. Surgeon General’s advisory on youth mental health corroborates concerns about social-media effects on young people. In the workshop he said approximately 500 school districts have already joined such litigation, and he described the district’s proposed participation as adding to that number.
The workshop transcript does not record a formal vote on C11. Trustees and staff discussed the item in committee; the superintendent said he would report back from meetings with the New Jersey School Boards Association and from the law firms handling the case.
No court filings or the specific law firm names were provided in the workshop transcript.
