The Nyssa School District board voted to approve a Close‑Up civic trip to Washington, D.C., for a group of middle‑ and high‑school students after staff described selection criteria and safety measures.
Staff presenter said the program registers 10 middle‑school and 10 high‑school students, with two chaperones assigned to each group. The Close‑Up program package includes airport transportation once students are at the destination, hotel accommodations and meals; staff said the district’s out‑of‑pocket costs would be limited and that the program enforces strict supervision and safety rules for student groups.
Students were selected via an application that requires essays, teacher recommendations and a grade‑and‑attendance threshold (no grade lower than a C and minimum attendance levels). Staff said students will present what they learned upon return and that some program participation may be eligible for extra‑credit consideration.
Board members asked about chaperones, selection procedures and whether the district had previously run the trip; staff confirmed the trip had been held in earlier years and that a more formal presentation will follow when students return. The motion to approve the trip passed by voice vote.
Next steps: staff will finalize chaperone assignments and logistics and the students will present outcomes to the board upon return.
