Summary
The council approved a restaurant retail liquor license for Made in Mexico Tacos and Tequila, package-store and lounge permits for Cottondale Tobacco Outlet, and short-term alcohol licenses for special events including a Levy Premium Foodservice event tied to a Morgan Wallen concert and Downtown Entertainment LLC's Parents Weekend.
The Tuscaloosa City Council approved several alcohol-licensing applications after staff presentations and Police Department sign-offs.
Staff presented an application for Made in Mexico Tacos and Tequila LLC (1825 McFarland Boulevard North, Suite 250). The Tuscaloosa Police Department reported no objection. Applicant Giovanni Sanchez identified himself and provided the business address; no members of the public spoke for or against the application and the council approved the restaurant retail liquor license by voice vote.
The council also considered ABC applications for SLZ LLC doing business as Cottondale Tobacco Outlet (locations and package-store details presented by staff). Ken Aycock spoke on behalf of the applicant and confirmed the action was a change of ownership; police reported no objection and the council approved requested permits, including an off-premises retail beer and table-wine license and a lounge retail liquor license where applicable.
On special-event alcohol permits, staff described a short-term permit for Levy Premium Foodservice to host a licensed alcohol area for a university concert event (presenter Herbert Tesch explained the fenced perimeter and that alcohol would not be allowed outside barricaded areas). Police and university public-safety officials described coordination: the University of Alabama will manage event security within its jurisdiction and Tuscaloosa Police Department will assist if needed. The permit was approved. The council also approved a less-than-7-days special-event retail license for Downtown Entertainment LLC (DKE Parents Weekend) for an April 11 event on University Boulevard; Brandon Hanks of Downtown Entertainment attended and thanked the council.
Why it matters: the approvals allow new on-premises alcohol service and short-term licensed areas for large events; in the Levy event the council recorded perimeter-control requirements and responsibility for security with UAPD.
What’s next: applicants may complete licensing steps with the city clerk and operate under the conditions described in their applications.
