The Borough of Highlands mayor and council issued a proclamation at their Sept. 17 meeting declaring Aug. 22, 2025 a day of remembrance for Patrick Kearns, a Navy veteran and longtime community volunteer.
The proclamation, read into the record, recounts Kearns’s service in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era aboard the USS Butte and notes he received the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. It also records his career work in the railroad division of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and his volunteer commitments to VFW Post 6902 in Highlands and the Twin Lakes Historical Society Lighthouse.
The council recorded its condolences and encouraged residents to pause and reflect on Kearns’s contributions to the community. The proclamation language concluded that Highlands had “lost a great man,” and the document was entered into the meeting record and dated 09/17/2025.
