The New Britain Common Council approved its consent agenda and moved quickly through a series of items on Oct. 8, adopting zoning amendments, proclamations and several procurement actions.
Councilors voted unanimously on the consent agenda (roll call recorded 14 in favor, 0 opposed). Individual items approved by voice vote included: a zoning change to allow small day‑care operations in business districts; amendments to fence regulations for the central business and historic districts; zoning rules for mechanical screening in industrial areas; and a zoning amendment establishing maximum driveway/curb‑cut widths and regulations for tandem parking (the latter adopted after a "strike‑all" amendment cleared planning and corporation counsel review, according to staff).
The council also adopted a set of recognitions and awareness resolutions: Indigenous Peoples' Day, Italian American Heritage Month, Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Polish American Heritage Month. The body adopted a Domestic Violence Awareness Month resolution and observed a requested moment of silence to recognize local victims.
On capital and operating matters, councilors authorized hiring design services for Willow Street Park (see separate article), approved purchase of a John Deere loader for Public Works for $229,258.88 to replace a 19‑year‑old machine, and authorized water‑works facility work to secure a secondary potable source (discussed as contingent on a $40,000,000 low‑interest state loan). The council moved into executive session to discuss a contractual agreement and, after returning, voted to approve the agreement that had been discussed in executive session.
The meeting concluded with a point of personal privilege offering condolences to State Representative Hilda Santiago and adjournment at 8:01 p.m.
