Summary
Council heard a series of city reports: new Chamber director Carrie Lorenzen previewed summer events; the EDA updated on Hardwood Estates lot sales and first-right-of-refusal changes; public works warned of temporary yellow water during hydrant flushing; and administration reported the data center development agreement is nearing final plat and closing.
The Cannon Falls City Council received several routine reports at its April 7 meeting.
Carrie Lorenzen introduced herself as the new Chamber of Commerce director for Cannon Falls and outlined upcoming events, including a Summer/Fun Fest (June 5 or June 11) and a golf tournament on June 15. Lorenzen said she is moving the Chamber office to City Hall and invited council members and residents to stop by.
Economic development staff reported on Phase 2 of the Hardwood Estates subdivision: Fieldstone Family Homes expressed interest in three lots; the EDA agreed to reduce first-right-of-refusal claims from four lots to two and shortened the acceptance window to seven days for lots with rights of refusal. Administration characterized the project as successful and said additional homebuilding interest remains strong.
Public works warned residents that hydrant flushing is underway and may temporarily tint water slightly yellow because of oxidized iron; staff said the water remains safe to drink. Separate public works remarks noted bids for the 2026 street project will be accepted next week and a public hearing will be scheduled in May after final assessment amounts are calculated.
Administration updated the council on the data center project: signature pages for the development agreement have been sent, closing and recording steps are underway, and final plat materials will be presented to the council in the coming weeks. A council member asked whether any legislative action this session would affect data centers; administration said nothing substantive had moved through committee and that an election-year calendar likely reduced chances of major action this session.
The reports were presented for information; no formal council actions were taken beyond scheduling future hearings and continuing project closeout work.
