Berkeley Heights board adjourns to executive session to discuss students, personnel and legal matters

The Berkeley Heights Board of Education voted at a special meeting March 6, 2025, to adjourn into an executive session to discuss matters involving students, personnel, contract negotiations and legal issues, board president Gail Bradford said.

The move came after the board read its meeting notice and a resolution citing the New Jersey Open Public Meetings Act. "Be it resolved that the Berkeley Heights Board of Education adjourns to executive session to discuss matters related to students, personnel, negotiations, and legal issues," Bradford said as the board prepared to recess. The board recessed at about 6:04 p.m.

The resolution recited the statutory grounds for excluding the public from part of the meeting, including matters made confidential by federal or state law, attorney-client privilege, collective bargaining, property negotiations and personnel matters. The secretary also confirmed that notice of the special meeting was sent to the Star-Ledger and the Courier News on March 4, 2025, and posted at district facilities.

After several hours in private session, the board returned to public session shortly before 9:40 p.m. A motion to return was made and seconded and was approved by voice vote. The board then opened the public-comment portion of the meeting and reminded residents that each speaker would be limited to three minutes and that comments about personnel matters are discouraged; the president said there were no attendees in person or online who wished to speak.

The meeting concluded after a final motion to adjourn; the board adjourned at 9:41 p.m. Bradford said that minutes of any items discussed in executive session will be made public when confidentiality is no longer applicable.

Because the subjects discussed in the executive session are confidential under state law, the board did not provide details of the discussions during the public portion of the meeting.
