Chris Schultz, representing the Murrieta Educators Association, used the district public comment period to officially "sunshine" the association's contract articles for 2025–26, signaling the topics the union intends to open in negotiations. "Article 6 (salaries) and Article 7 (health, welfare and benefits) are open," Schultz said, adding the association also plans to open Article 8 (contract hours and duties) and Article 12 (class size).
Schultz framed the move as part of ongoing, good‑faith bargaining. "Attracting and retaining top‑notch talent and providing a total compensation package that allows educators to live in the community is imperative," he said.
The board then considered and adopted the district's initial contract proposal to the Murrieta Educators Association (Item G6). The motion carried by voice; the board indicated unanimous support on the record.
Public comment and allegation: earlier in public comment, Jose Carreno accused a trustee of receiving $10,000 in contributions from the teachers' unit, citing County Form 497 filings. The claim was made from the public speaker's podium and was not adjudicated at the meeting. No trustee response was recorded during the comment period; the board noted public comment procedures limit board replies.
Why it matters: adoption of initial proposals and formal sunshine notices begin the negotiation calendar and set the frame for bargaining on compensation, workload and class size — issues that affect staffing and district budgets.
Next steps: bargaining teams for the district and the association move into negotiation sessions; staff will return to the board as required for public disclosures and any required ratification steps.
