State DOT assessing locked Belmar movable bridge; borough uncertain on repair timeline

The Belmar Borough Council heard an update that the state Department of Transportation is still assessing damage to a movable bridge that municipal staff reported was found locked. Mr. King, a borough staff member, said the DOT’s commissioner’s office told borough officials that contractors and engineers were on site, a crane was mobilized and that the agency did not yet know the cause or the extent of damage.

"They couldn't open the bridge. They went out and assessed basically ... they mobilized the crane to come out so that when the bridge was open, it would hold it in place," Mr. King said in the meeting. He added that the DOT had not provided a repair timetable as of the afternoon update.

Council leaders emphasized the importance of expediting repairs because the closure affects businesses on both sides of the bridge and local traffic patterns. The council asked staff to share DOT updates as soon as they become available.

The meeting record shows borough officials repeatedly told residents and business owners that the DOT will notify nearby municipalities before releasing more public information about the bridge assessment. The council did not adopt any action at the meeting to fund or oversee bridge repairs; officials said they were awaiting the DOT’s damage assessment and repair plan.
