County grants fund free youth registration and conservatory pavilion work in Taylor

Commissioner Alex Garza told the council the Wayne County Community Impact Initiative has directed $180,000 to District 14 and, during the Jan. 6 meeting, presented two awards for Taylor organizations. “We were awarded a $180,000, to District 14 from the county,” Garza said, and announced a $50,000 award for Taylor North Little League and $100,000 for the Taylor Conservatory Foundation.

Doug, representing Taylor North Little League, described how the $50,000 will be used: “We were able to offer free registration for every registered child at Taylor North this year with this money,” he said, adding the funds will reduce financial strain on families and allow the program to expand outreach.

Kyle, speaking for the conservatory foundation, said the $100,000 grant will help rehabilitate and expand the pavilion on the botanical gardens’ grounds as part of a 2026 capital project. He said the project will support the conservatory’s public programming as the organization marks its 20th year of public operation.

Garza framed both awards as part of efforts to bring county dollars back into the district. The council offered thanks and recognition to the organizations and accepted the presentations. The grants were described in the meeting as immediate awards for local nonprofit projects; the presenters said program details and timelines will be finalized by the recipient organizations.

The council did not take additional votes beyond accepting the presentations; next steps named by presenters included advertising and registration for the league and pavilion planning for the conservatory.
