Taylor career-center students seek plungers and $10,000 for Unified Special Olympics plunge

Marie Louise Kavner Radiger, a transition teacher at the career center, asked the council to help promote the district’s Unified Special Olympics plunge to be held March 5 at Taylor High.
"Our district goal is $10,000 and 100 plungers," Radiger said. At the time of the presentation she reported the effort was halfway to its fundraising target with about $5,000 raised and roughly 40 registered plungers, including students and staff. Radiger described safety accommodations for students with mobility or sensory needs (divers on hand, a shallow four-foot pool, a kiddie pool alternative and confetti poppers for students in wheelchairs) and said check-in starts at 7:45 a.m. with the plunge beginning at 8:15 a.m.
A student volunteer, Madison, told the council the Special Olympics "means everything" to her because her brother has a disability and the program provides meaningful inclusion opportunities.
Council members encouraged the event and a councilmember said he would take the plunge. The council received and filed the presentation.
