Summary
The council unanimously approved accepting a $50,000 donation from the Finest and Bravest Foundation for off‑road UTV equipment for the fire department and accepted $7,627.63 in donations for Animal Services to support animals in the city shelter.
The Sugar Land City Council unanimously approved two donation-related items during a brief meeting, accepting a $50,000 gift to the fire department and $7,627.63 in donations to Animal Services.
Council member Suzanne Whatley moved to accept the $50,000 monetary donation from the Finest and Bravest Foundation and approve a $50,000 budget amendment to record the revenue and expense; Council member Von der Hart seconded the motion and the vote passed 7-0. Fire Chief Mark Campisi told the council the department had pursued a grant to replace specialty off‑road UTVs but that the grant “didn’t come through,” and staff requested the donation to cover equipment updates.
Brandon Buell, a board member of the Finest and Bravest Foundation, presented the donation and praised the department. “It is our true privilege to present this check for $50,000 to you all,” Buell said, calling the Sugar Land Fire Department “the very best of public service, professionalism, courage, and commitment.” Mayor Carol McCutcheon and council members paused for a photograph with donors and department staff after the vote.
Separately, Melissa Hopson, animal services administrator, reported the shelter received 37 donations totaling $7,627.63 between Dec. 6, 2025, and March 18, 2026. Staff recommended acceptance of those funds to support animals in the city’s care. Councilor Single moved to accept the donations and Council member Beshur seconded; the motion passed 7-0.
The consent agenda was also approved by voice vote earlier in the meeting. No public commenters spoke during the public-comment period.
Next steps: staff will process the budget amendment for the $50,000 donation and apply the animal donations to shelter programs as described by staff.
