Suffield updates staffing, STEAM lab and discipline plans; FY25 shows preliminary surplus

Superintendent Matt Dunbar and incoming Assistant Superintendent Laura Norbut updated the board on facilities and staffing at the July 14 meeting. Work on the Suffield High School STEAM Lab is ‘‘well underway’’ with flooring and paint completed, and the district is pursuing a proposed local special-education site for outplaced students, with initial conversations held with an architect and Kevin Goff, chair of the Permanent Building Commission.
Administrators reported several staffing fills: the Suffield Middle School library media specialist position has been filled; a chemistry teacher resignation at Suffield High School has been replaced; special services positions are filled except for one Suffield High School special-education teaching position; Spaulding School filled a one-year art teacher contract; and multiple paraeducator positions have been filled. The district noted 15 of 18 rooftop HVAC units for Suffield High School were delivered and are expected to be installed prior to the start of school, with the remaining three units due by the end of the calendar year.
On student discipline Superintendent Dunbar said the district submits discipline information to the Connecticut State Department of Education via the ED166 Student Disciplinary Report. Dr. Norbut described social-emotional programming and said school climate plans need to be developed by December and that the MTSS model will be refined.
Business Manager Eric Remington reported a preliminary FY25 potential surplus of approximately $112,000 and said the plan would be to replenish the non-lapsing fund with any final surplus; auditors are scheduled for October. Board members discussed whether increased special-education funding approved by the state legislature will be received and asked for additional detail on the advisory building consultant’s role.
