Summary
Anastasia Kurth, UW Extension crops and soils educator, described recent pesticide applicator, manure applicator and nutrient-management trainings and said the office is planning field days and pasture walks this season to support local producers.
Anastasia Kurth, extension crops and soils educator for Richland County, briefed the committee on April 6 about recent and upcoming Extension programming for farmers, including pesticide-applicator training, manure-applicator training and nutrient-management education tied to the SNAP-Plus planning tool.
Kurth said the pesticide-applicator training (held in February and March) is required every five years for those who apply restricted-use pesticides. She described a hands-on manure-applicator workshop that used 3-D printed tools to simulate equipment and reported more than 30 participants at the course. Kurth and extension colleagues also delivered nutrient-management training in March; farmers must take that course every four years to write their own nutrient-management plans, a requirement connected to farmland-preservation tax-credit eligibility.
Kurth said Extension will support producer-led field days and pasture walks this season and that staff will coordinate with the Land Conservation Department on SNAP-Plus and nutrient-plan updates.
Quote: "I'm Anastasia Kurth. I'm the extension crops and soils educator here in Richland County," she said, and described the trainings and participant counts.
