Kern County officials report 316,590 pounds collected in annual canned‑food drive

Presenters said the goal had been 275,000 pounds and that the drive collected 316,590 pounds of food, which will replenish Golden Empire Gleaners’ shelves and support families, children and seniors across Kern County. The executive director of the gleaners thanked county staff and volunteers for raffles, bake sales and interdepartmental competitions that contributed to the result.
Why it matters: Kern County ranks fifteenth in the state for food insecurity, and the annual drive is a major local source of donated food for distribution networks.
What’s next: The board thanked the organizers. After the presentation the board voted to adjourn to closed session to consider listed items 41–45.
