City recreation manager announces Raiders Foundation grant, rising camp enrollments and lifeguard hiring push

Lisa Tovar, the city’s recreation manager, told the Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission on April 7 that the department received a $12,500 grant from the Raiders Foundation to support the Doolittle Active Adult Center. The grant will fund gym passes and free lunches for seniors, Tovar said.
“We applied for and were awarded a grant worth $12,500 from the Raiders Foundation,” Tovar said, adding the funds will provide fitness passes and weekly lunches for local seniors.
Tovar and Latonya Lomax, coordinator at Doolittle Community Center, described summer-camp capacity and program changes. Lomax said weekly enrollment capacity is about 550 spots for elementary-aged camp and 143 for teen camp; staff increased financial-aid allocation to 75% to serve more low-income participants and revamped the counselor-in-training program with HR-led training.
Tovar also detailed strong sports participation this spring: more than 400 players across 25 adult pickleball leagues, an expanded soccer season and new girls’ divisions, and the largest seasons to date for multiple youth sports. She said the department will host lifeguard hiring fairs (two at Pavilion, one at Muni Pool) and that hours at the new Pavilion outdoor pool are not finalized pending a health-district review of lifeguard staffing needs and budget implications.
The commission asked for materials and flyers to help promote programs; Tovar said registration and class information are posted on the city website and staff would provide flyers to ward offices.
