The Torrington City Council on April 7 unanimously confirmed Jefferson Schick as fire chief for a two‑year term that begins April 13, 2026 and runs through April 10, 2028. Mayor Herb Dobie said Schick was elected by members of the Torrington Volunteer Fire Department and presented his experience; Schick told the council he has 22 years of service and has held positions from specialist to division chief.
At the start of the meeting Brian Young, CEO of Go Goshen, presented a ceremonial $20,000 check to the city from the Progress Program — funded by the county’s quarter‑penny economic development tax — for upgrades to fire department equipment, specifically air packs. "That's real money going back into local businesses, community improvements, and projects that residents can see and benefit from," Young said.
Mayor Dobie asked for a motion to confirm Schick; Councilman Diehl moved to approve the appointment and Councilman Victorin seconded. The council voted in favor and Mayor Dobie said the appointment is effective April 13.
Schick said he plans to appoint Cody Scott as assistant chief; the mayor noted the assistant chief appointment power lies with the chief. The outgoing chief, Luis Correa, gave a brief department report later in public comment thanking his team and saying the rural fire district received a Go Goshen grant for a UTV purchase.
The council’s acceptance of the Progress Program award and confirmation of the chief were both routine, unanimous votes. The Go Goshen program, Young said, reinvested $383,350 in Goshen County businesses and projects in the past fiscal year.
