The Petoskey Board of Education elected its 2026 officers and approved a series of administrative and financial measures at a meeting Tuesday evening at the Spitler Administration Building.
Trustee Denise Petoskey was elected board president for 2026 in a motion by Trustee Jenni Attie that Trustee Beth Flynn seconded; the vote was unanimous, 5-0. The board also elected Kathy Reed as first vice-president, Mark Ashley as second vice-president, Beth Flynn as secretary and Jenni Attie as treasurer in separate unanimous votes.
Following officer elections, the board approved warrants totaling $3,702,645.03. Dr. Leslie recommended payment of the warrants; Trustee Jenni Attie moved approval and Trustee Kathy Reed seconded. The motion carried 5-0.
The board approved quotes from Custer, Inc. for new library furniture—$67,114.57 for the high school media center and $99,277.42 for the middle school media center—after a motion by Trustee Kathy Reed and a second from Trustee Jenni Attie. The board also approved a resolution prepared by the district’s bond counsel to call an election and authorize ballot language for a non-homestead (operational) millage and a sinking fund millage; that resolution passed unanimously.
Other actions included approval of two new high school courses, History V Hollywood and The World at War, to begin in the 2026–27 school year, and creation of one additional middle school special-education aide position based on a staffing needs review; both measures passed 5-0. The board voted to table approval of the 2025–26 Food Service Fund revised budget to the February regular meeting.
Board and administrative reports covered routine updates across the district: elementary, middle and high school highlights; teaching and learning items including winter testing and canceled professional development; special education data flow (MiPSE); and a financial report on a new software system rollout. The superintendent reviewed Police/ICE Policy 5201 and protocols, noting access requests should be honored only on the basis of a court order signed by a judge. The district noted an annual operating budget of approximately $40 million, nearly 2,500 students and more than 300 employees.
