Sandra Faoys, speaking for district staff, presented a formal request from band director Chris Rivera to name a small storage building at Andrews Field after retired band instructor Douglas Oribez.
Faoys said Rivera provided a written descriptor and a proposed biography for Oribez and asked the committee for permission to gather community input and to return with a formal proposal. Committee members responded that they were generally open to proceeding and requested staff confirm whether the proposal has broader family or community support and to circulate the candidate biography in writing before placing the item on a future agenda.
Faoys said, “I could certainly circle back with Mr. Rivera to see if this is something that he is bringing forth from the community…And from there, we will be meeting again so I can bring it actually as an item on the agenda.” The committee directed staff to follow up and bring a written biography and any community endorsements; if the committee favors the nomination, staff will advance a formal request to the full board and coordinate with the city for any necessary naming approvals.
No formal action was taken at the meeting; staff will return with documentation if the nomination proceeds.
