Nevada County highlights mobile health clinics, vending machines and CSAC award during Public Health Week

Kathy Cahill, Nevada County Public Health director, and Toby Gaven, program manager for health and wellness, briefed the Board of Supervisors on Public Health Week activities and a three-part pilot of mobile health clinics that the department runs with local partners.
Gaven said the Mobile Health Coalition combines dental screenings and care, immunizations, HIV and Hep C testing, wound care and benefits navigation. The second pilot grew from 12 patients served to 35, and vending machines stocked with basic health supplies have distributed 7,267 free items in the past 12 months, he said.
"We're really excited about that program and the work we are doing to expand access to care," Gaven said, noting partnerships with the Department of Social Services for benefits enrollment and a CSAC Challenge Award that recognized their mobile-health efforts.
The board read a proclamation recognizing the first week of April 2026 as Public Health Week in Nevada County and adopted the resolution by roll call (District 5 absent). Board members thanked staff for the mobile-clinic pilot, partnerships bringing wound care and bike repair to clinics, and for work reaching underserved residents.
Public comment on the item was not substantive; board members asked staff to keep them informed as pilots continue and scale. No additional funding or formal program change was voted at this meeting.
