District reports strong start to school year; middle school open house set for Sept. 25

Superintendent Scott Roper told the Holly Area School District Board on Sept. 8 that the 2025–26 school year is off to a strong start, citing high attendance, student achievements and active community engagement. He noted the Special Education Department held productive professional learning, and the district received a $2,015 donation from Knights of Columbus #8500 to support Peer-to-Peer programs and the high-school Life Skills program.
Roper highlighted student accomplishments including senior diver Riley Hummel breaking a 23-year school record (a score of 240.25) and several Holly High School FCCLA students earning medals at the National Leadership Conference in Orlando. Middle-school attendance has been above 95% in the early weeks; Patterson Elementary reported about 80% family attendance at its Meet the Teacher/Open House night, and Broncho Virtual School reported roughly three-quarters family participation for orientation.
On facilities, Roper said punch-list work continues at Holly Middle School and the High School Kiva and that traffic flow at the middle school has stabilized. Construction of the Sherman Administrative Offices is on schedule and design work is nearly complete for Summer 2026 projects (stadium entrance, auditorium and pool upgrades, locker updates, playground components, and fencing). The district plans to add a second bike rack at the middle school because of high usage and is exploring construction of a sidewalk to improve student access.
Executive Director Michelle Szczechowicz updated the board on curriculum and professional learning (new-teacher onboarding, Xello career-readiness tool training, Atlas Rubicon pacing work and instructional strategies with Fielding International). Director Earl reported that auditors who visited July 28–31 found the district in a good position to finalize the audit and that Title I-A federal funds for 2025–26 have been released and the application is in progress.
The district is arranging public outreach—digital and print flyers, an ad in the Tri-County Times and direct communications to families—for the Holly Middle School Community Open House on Sept. 25 from 5:00–6:30 p.m.
