Holly Area Schools awarded state funds to support phonics-aligned literacy program
Summary
The district reported a state award of more than $300,000 to implement UFLI Foundations and outlined summer curriculum work and upcoming professional development to align instruction with the Science of Reading.
Executive Director Michelle Szczechowicz told the Holly Area School District board on Aug. 11 that the district received more than $300,000 from the State of Michigan to support literacy instruction aligned with the Science of Reading.
Szczechowicz said the funds will be used to implement UFLI Foundations, an explicit, systematic phonics program, in the coming school year. She also summarized summer curriculum activities, including a well-received Summer Reading Program that concluded July 23 with Oakland County Parks leading nature-focused learning activities at the Meadow Lake clubhouse.
District staff are planning professional development on Aug. 20–21 focused on standards alignment, literacy and mathematics instruction and a tour of the new Middle School. The curriculum department is also preparing sessions for a Summer Learning Conference emphasizing AI in instruction, Atlas Rubicon for standards alignment, trauma awareness, and strengthening literacy and math practices.
The board did not vote on any new curriculum policies at the Aug. 11 meeting; the report was informational and tied to the district strategic plan and upcoming training for staff.
