Hennepin County highlights Earth Day plans, river restoration and tree‑planting goal

Alyssa Rechinger, environmental education supervisor in Hennepin County’s Environment & Energy Department, told commissioners on April 7 that the county is marking Earth Day with community cleanups, tree plantings and education events across parks and waterway corridors.
"Every Earth Day, our community is inspired to act together to protect the natural resources that make Hennepin County a special place to call home," Rechinger said, introducing a short video that showcased county conservation work. She highlighted the Sacred Water Shared Future campaign and River Days of Action and said partners are staging more than 40 cleanup events in the weeks ahead and that a map and list of roughly 90 Earth Day‑related events is available on the county webpage.
Rechinger noted county collaboration with cities, park districts and residents toward a climate goal to plant 1,000,000 trees by 2030 and ongoing efforts to permanently protect 6,000 acres of natural areas. The presentation urged residents to sign up for litter cleanups, adopt a storm drain and join swap and repair events that reduce waste.
The board thanked staff for outreach and volunteer coordination; no board action was required on the presentation.
