Suffield Board honors retirees, names Teacher and Paraeducator of the Year

The Suffield Board of Education recognized retiring staff members, named Heather Goldstein Teacher of the Year and Meg Goodstein Paraeducator of the Year, and heard brief reports from student representatives at its June 2 meeting.
The Suffield Board of Education on June 2 recognized staff retiring at the end of the 2024–25 school year and presented district awards to staff and students. Superintendent Matt Dunbar and board members paid tribute to several retirees and acknowledged their service to the district.
Superintendent Matt Dunbar and Director of Special Services Dr. Diana Kelley introduced honorees including Denise Rigby, A. Ward Spaulding School speech and language pathologist; Shannon Picard, Suffield Middle School English language arts teacher; Joe MacArdle, district maintenance; Doreen Tapper, Suffield Middle School paraeducator; and Kathleen Matchett, McAlister Intermediate School paraeducator. The board also presented Meg Goodstein as the 2026 Paraeducator of the Year and Heather Goldstein as the 2026 Suffield Teacher of the Year, as announced by Elementary Special Services Supervisor Jana Volpe and Teacher of the Year Committee Chair Samantha Schrager.
Student representatives Keila Silva, Class of 2025, and Olivia Mishtal, Class of 2026, provided short updates on district events, reporting celebrations, ACES Day activities, and Unified Sports participation. Board Chair Maureen Sattan and other members expressed appreciation to the students and to Assistant Superintendent Michelle Zawawi, who is retiring, for their service to the district.
The recognitions and reports occupied the opening portion of the meeting; there was no public comment filed for the session. The board thanked all honorees and wished departing staff well.
