Elgin council told police won $20,000 GM co-op grant to help buy community liaison vehicle

The city manager informed the council that the Elgin Police Department was awarded a GM co-op grant offering $20,000 toward the purchase of a vehicle.
He said the grant’s maximum award was $20,000 and that the city’s local investment of $5,000 would make a total of $25,000 available to acquire a new vehicle for the department’s community liaison program. "Our only investment towards that would be $5,000," the manager said. "The chief just got notice today that we're awarded the full amount, the highest dollar they could give us, which was a 20."
The manager said staff will bring the grant acceptance and any necessary purchasing actions forward on the next council agenda. He noted standard ongoing costs such as insurance would apply before putting the vehicle into service.
