Parks advocate urges Hope Mills to prioritize parkland purchases

At the December meeting, Mark Hess, chair of the Hope Mills Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, urged the town to prioritize acquiring land for parks and recreation as Hope Mills grows.
Hess said the community has outgrown the current recreation center and suggested converting the existing building into a senior center while building a new recreation facility elsewhere. He recommended the board be willing to purchase available parcels even if development funds are not immediately available, noting land can be held until funds are secured.
"As land becomes available, if it becomes available, have an open mind to purchase land," Hess said, adding that the lakefront parcel the town bought previously has been only partially developed and could accommodate future park improvements.
Mayor responded that parks are a priority for the new board and identified Commissioner Trammell as the liaison; the manager said staff are preparing projects for upcoming grant requests in the legislative short session next spring.
