Residents press trustees for community school support, crosswalks and action on nuisance property

Three members of the public addressed the Board of Trustees during the general public-comment period.
Henry Schonard described his volunteer work at Los Ranchos Elementary and on the Department of Senior Affairs advisory council and urged trustees to pursue a community-school model that fosters intergenerational programming and stronger collaboration with Albuquerque Public Schools. Schonard also noted the upcoming APS board election for District 3 and said new representation could help advance collaboration.
Jeff Phillips listed upcoming village events (Agriculture Committee meeting, community walks, a public information meeting on Bridle/Rio Grande improvements, and National Night Out). Phillips also pressed trustees to act on the property at 605 Tascosa Lane NW, saying it remains a public menace despite last September's resolution ordering cleanup.
Teresa Rael asked the board to consider installing a marked crosswalk and signage across Rio Grande at El Portal to help pedestrians and bicyclists reach the park and nearby markets; she cited elderly residents who cross frequently and said motorists do not reliably stop.
Mayor Lawrence Scribe and trustees acknowledged the concerns and said staff and the village attorney are pursuing enforcement options for nuisance properties and that traffic and safety improvements will be considered as part of broader planning and grant-funded repaving work.
