The borough of Roseland swore in Michael Traina as a patrol officer on July 15 after the council approved Resolution 244-2025. Traina recited the oath of office in front of family and the dais, and council members and attendees offered congratulations.
Council members also read a proclamation honoring the late George Pilsacker for his decades of service to Roseland's volunteer fire and police departments; a family member accepted the proclamation and thanked the borough.
In a public-safety update, a council member reported initial numbers tied to license-plate-reader (LPR) installations, comparing a two-year period. The transcript records the council's preliminary figures as "motor vehicle thefts have decreased by 80%," motor vehicle burglaries decreased by 70%, and attempted burglaries decreased by 50%. Officials said the data were preliminary and further analysis will continue as another LPR reader is placed in town.
Why this matters: The appointment adds staffing to the Roseland Police Department; the proclamation recognized long-standing volunteer service. The LPR figures, if borne out by later analysis, would reflect a substantial reduction in certain property crimes, but council members described the numbers as preliminary and said they plan additional review.
What's next: Traina joins the Roseland Police Department; the borough plans to install additional LPR readers and to review the data more deeply before releasing formal reports.
