The Boone City Council approved a package of routine motions including a hiring resolution, a salary increase for a public-works employee, a construction pay application and a small downtown incentive grant. The council also approved a zoning variance for a proposed Spring Green maintenance building in the Downtown C-3 district.
Highlights of actions passed: • Resolution to hire Eric Funk as an assistant mechanic/laborer in public works was approved after the department reported a competitive applicant pool. • A step increase in pay for public-works laborer Eduardo Cortez was approved; staff said the step equates to roughly a $500 monthly pre-tax increase. • Pay application No. 1 for Mintern Incorporated for the water treatment plant ground-storage-reservoir rehabilitation project was approved after staff verified calculations. • The council approved a Boone Downtown incentive grant of $1,000 for Gemini Moon LLC to complete entrance repairs. • The council granted a variance for Spring Green’s new maintenance building to reduce masonry requirements on sides of the building deemed not visible from the street; planning and zoning had recommended approval.
Why it matters: These votes advance city maintenance and downtown-revival efforts and authorize payments to contractors and staff adjustments; the Spring Green variance affects downtown design standards and was approved because the sides of the building are largely unseen.
What’s next: Staff will process personnel paperwork, release pay application funds to the contractor, and file the variance decision and grant documents in municipal records.
