The San Diego City Council on Feb. 25 read and approved a slate of proclamations recognizing local volunteer groups, sports and civic leaders.
Council Member Whitburn introduced a proclamation declaring March 1 San Diego FC Day, thanking the new Major League Soccer franchise and its community programs. Mayor Gloria joined council members at the dais to welcome team representatives and urged San Diegans to attend the club’s first home match at Snapdragon Stadium. Tom Penn, the SDFC executive present for the ceremony, said the ownership and staff were “welcome to the club” and presented scarfs to council members.
Council members also recognized the Southeast Disaster Response Team, a coalition of eight local organizations led by the Harvey Family Foundation and the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA that coordinated volunteer relief after January 2024 floods. Arman Harvey, founder of the Harvey Family Foundation, said the recognition “belongs to the survivors, the volunteers and the relentless advocates who refused to let their community be forgotten.” Councilmember Moreno noted the group’s role in water remediation and returning displaced residents to their homes.
The council thanked Lincoln High School’s state football champions and invited players and coaches to speak. Aiden Jackson, speaking for the team, said the squad was honored to “represent Southeast San Diego and bring well‑deserved attention to our community.” Council members also read proclamations for SD PACE’s decade of service to seniors, Crystal Trent’s historic achievement as a locomotive engineer, and Dwayne Hill, a longtime community volunteer.
The council approved the proclamations by voice vote; the motion carried unanimously.
