Summary
The City Council awarded construction of Old Riverside Park to Eastern Builders Inc. for $3,980,770 and was told the contractor expects to mobilize about 10 days after notice to proceed, with staff aiming for completion in calendar year 2026.
The Sandy Springs City Council on April 7 approved a $3,980,770 contract to construct Old Riverside Park, a riverfront project that city staff say will add hiking trails, a natural playground, restrooms and expanded river access.
Recreation and Parks Director Brent Walker told the council the city issued an invitation to bid on Jan. 16, received bids and recommends award to Eastern Builders Inc. "They said they can mobilize about 10 days after notice to proceed," Walker said, and staff's goal is to complete the project in calendar year 2026.
Walker described the park as a roughly 20‑plus acre site with a centralized hub of amenities and extensive wooded natural‑surface trails. He said soft‑surface trails were removed from the initial bid package to ensure like‑for‑like pricing among bidders and that staff will contract separately for those trails during construction to obtain a better scope for smaller contractors.
Councilmembers praised the long‑running effort to build the park and asked about volunteer opportunities. Walker said the public will not be allowed on the site during construction for safety reasons but that the city’s Eco Stewards program and other volunteer efforts would be options once construction is complete.
The motion to award the contract passed unanimously. Staff said work will begin after the contractor provides insurance and other required documents and that the city will provide schedule updates to the council as construction progresses.
