Senate adopts resolution naming stretch of Highway 92 the Educators and Teachers Memorial Highway

The Colorado State Senate on April 8 adopted House Joint Resolution 10-24 to designate a segment of State Highway 92 in Delta County — mile markers 3 through 7 through an area known as Reed — as the Educators and Teachers Memorial Highway. Senator Coleman moved the resolution and the measure was adopted by the Senate without opposition.

Senator Catlin, speaking in favor of the resolution, said it was not aimed at any single person but ‘‘the countless women and men who have dedicated their lives around our great state to instilling the skills and knowledge’’ that prepare students for work, college and service. Senator Coleman noted the historical ties of Reed, Colorado and said the signage would prompt drivers ‘‘to think about their favorite teacher.’’

The resolution’s text, read at length by the clerk, recounts the long history of public education in Colorado — dating to territorial acts in 1861 — and cites local history in Delta County and District 50J. It authorizes the Colorado Department of Transportation to accept and expend gifts, grants and donations for placement of the initial signs marking the new designation and directs that copies of the joint resolution be sent to the Colorado Education Association, Delta County School District 50J, the Delta County Board of County Commissioners, the Delta County Historical Society, the Colorado State Board of Education and the Colorado Department of Transportation.

The Senate recorded a 35-0 voice vote on the measure. Senators present on the floor asked that the current roll call be added as cosponsors.

The resolution takes the form of a ceremonial designation and does not create regulatory changes; staff cited the Department of Transportation as the agency responsible for sign placement and any fundraising or donations for initial signage.
