Hot Springs official announces $302,000 AARP grant to continue school prevention program

Director Dudley Webb told the board that on the preceding Thursday he accepted a $302,000 grant from AARP to continue a prevention and recovery program operating in the Hot Springs School District. Webb described the funding as supporting opioid‑overdose prevention, substance‑abuse awareness for students and families, coalition building across Garland County and education that helps reduce stigma.
Webb said the program began with planning in June 2023 and has since generated interest from other school districts; four additional districts in Arkansas plan to implement the program, bringing total funding approaching $1.5 million across implementations. He credited local partners — including law enforcement, judges and school officials — and named state Representative Richard McGrew for attending a recognition event.
Webb said the grant extends program operations for another two years at Hot Springs School District and expressed hope the program could expand to more counties and states as a preventative model.
