Board hears facilities and technology updates; septic systems and PA system bids recommended

Chippewa Hills School District officials updated the board March 9 on multiple facilities and technology matters, recommending several near-term capital and compliance actions.
District operations staff reported that inspections of the septic systems at both Mecosta and Weidman indicate the district should replace pumps, tanks and drainfields rather than perform limited repairs, citing the systems’ age and current condition. The recommendation was presented by Kyle Talicska.
Talicska also said the district issued an RFP for a secondary-site public-address system; vendors advised approving bids before spring break to complete work by the end of summer, and the board scheduled an additional meeting on March 17 to consider those bids.
Regarding the Remus building, President Anthony Gibson told the board that any decision on the facility will require a hazardous materials inspection to identify potential abatement issues.
On classroom technology, Superintendent Michelle Newman reported the district received approval to use Title funds to purchase updated devices, including smartboards for all classrooms. District staff (Mr. Compson) is working on vendor quotes and recommendations; to comply with grant rules the devices must be installed by the end of the school year and a professional-development plan must be developed.
The board also reviewed quotes for rugs funded by a Native American Heritage Fund grant and was reassured that shipping charges would not exceed quoted amounts.
The board took the updates for consideration and scheduled additional review of RFP responses at the March 17 special meeting.
