Cabarrus board to ask county to place $300 million school bond on November ballot

The Cabarrus County Board of Education on April 6 presented a resolution requesting that the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners place a $300 million general obligation bond referendum on the November 3, 2026 ballot to fund capital projects identified in the district’s long‑range capital plan.
Brian Cohen and other staff summarized the request and read the draft resolution to trustees, noting the district has identified more than $1 billion in construction and deferred maintenance needs but that asking the county for $300 million reflects the projects the district plans to prioritize and the practical constraints related to the Local Government Commission’s review and expenditure timeframes. Staff said the request package is consistent with the long‑range capital plan the board adopted on March 16.
The resolution lists major priorities that would be included in the bond package: a replacement school for Central Cabarrus High School, deferred maintenance lists, renovations to Northwest Middle (conversion to high school), renovations to R. Brown and McAllister, and other deferred maintenance items that together formed the $300 million request. Trustees discussed that the $1 billion figure represents identified needs but that the county may survey the public and set a different amount for the referendum.
Staff asked the board to approve the resolution and authorize submission to the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners; the board scheduled the resolution for action at next week’s meeting after minor clarifications in the draft were identified and will send documentation to the county for LGC review.
