Summary
Chief Stewart of the Brunswick Police Department presented Rangeley Police Department with accreditation under the Maine Law Enforcement Accreditation Program (mLEAP), praising the department for meeting rigorous standards across training, administration and evidence handling.
Chief Stewart of the Brunswick Police Department, who also serves as president of the Maine Chiefs of Police Association, visited the meeting to present the Rangeley Police Department with accreditation under the Maine Law Enforcement Accreditation Program (mLEAP).
Stewart told the board the mLEAP process requires meeting 164 standards across areas such as administration, training and use-of-force policy and that participants must provide documentary proof and pass an on-site assessment. "Volunteering to take this accreditation on, it goes above and beyond," he said, adding that assessors gave the department a "glowing" review of its facility, equipment and evidence room.
The presenter said the program is designed to keep departments current on best practices and to give the public confidence that local policing follows recognized professional standards. The chair congratulated the department and singled out Daniel (the department recipient) for the accomplishment.
The accreditation does not create new local obligations but signals that department policies and practices match mLEAP criteria; the presentation concluded with formal congratulations and no board action required.
