At the Dec. 9 meeting of the Nome Public Schools Board of Education, ANSEP Director Kacey Miller presented details about the ANSEP Acceleration Academy and Evan Seaman of Altman, Rogers & Co. presented the FY25 audit report prior to the board approving that audit later in the meeting.
NBMHS Principal Teriscovkya Smith and Assistant Principal Holly Harlow recognized students Rose Ozenna, Lauryn Erlich-Piscoya and Korbin Knipfer. Student Representative Sara James provided the student report. District staff reports were delivered by NES Principal Michelle Carton, ACSA Principal Emily Annas, Director of Technology Jim Shreve, Director of SPED Mary Donaldson, Director of Federal Programs Karen Dixon, Director of Facilities Jonathan Duarte and CFO Genevieve Hollins; minutes indicate those written reports are attached to the official meeting record and prompted discussion in some cases.
Superintendent Jamie Burgess reported to the board, noting that the district held its first Equity meeting recently, plans a January follow-up meeting and is pursuing tribal consultation to deepen partnerships with local tribal entities. Member Marjorie Kunaq Tahbone asked that presenters limit comments to highlights and raised concerns about NES survey results, inclusivity during Native American Heritage Month and student vaping.
The board's next regular meeting is scheduled for Jan. 13, 2026 at 5:30 p.m. The meeting adjourned at 7:55 p.m.
