Maywood trustees split on Juneteenth paid holiday, home-kitchen ordinance draft and civic app transition

A proposal to make Juneteenth a paid village holiday failed on a 3-3 vote. Trustee I. Brandon moved (seconded by Trustee M. Jones) to move forward with Juneteenth as a paid holiday; Ayes were Trustees Brandon, Jones and A. Sanchez; Nays were Mayor Perkins, Trustee K. Wellington and Trustee N. Booker. Village Manager Willie Norfleet and trustees discussed complications in holiday scheduling and overtime calculations for police officers.
On digital services, Trustee N. Booker presented MyCivic (Civic311), a comprehensive mobile app option. The board voted 3-3 on a motion to work with Civic311 to transition away from the current Q&A system; the motion failed (Ayes: Trustees A. Sanchez, K. Wellington, N. Booker; Nays: Mayor Perkins, Trustees I. Brandon and M. Jones). Trustee Brandon and Mayor Perkins flagged concerns about procedures and the village's existing system implementation status.
Separately, the board authorized village legal and staff to draft an ordinance to regulate home kitchen occupations and cottage food operations after Village Attorney Michael Jurusik presented a memorandum. The motion to allow drafting the ordinance carried with a split vote (Ayes: Mayor Perkins, Trustees I. Brandon, M. Jones, K. Wellington; Nays: Trustees A. Sanchez, N. Booker).
Trustees also approved raising the Mexico flag for National Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 and discussed other code-enforcement items with no action taken.
