Committee advances resolution to name segment of U.S. 30 for Sgt. William G. Patterson

The resolution’s backers described Sgt. William Patterson as a longtime Lake County sheriff’s sergeant who also served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve and was killed after a pursuit on Jan. 25, 1994. Chris Ake, president of Lake County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 125, told the committee Patterson “always answered the call to his community and to his country” and asked members to approve the naming to honor Patterson’s service and sacrifice.
Ake recounted Patterson’s biography — born Jan. 12, 1950, a Hobart High School alumnus who joined the Lake County Sheriff’s Department in 1976, served in Desert Storm and Desert Shield, and was survived by a wife and three children — and described the circumstances of the crash that killed him. The sponsor noted the family’s support for the memorial naming and asked for the committee’s approval.
A motion to approve the resolution was made and seconded, and the committee chair called the roll. The committee recorded the measure as passing 10-0.
The resolution will proceed as the committee’s rules direct; no further committee debate was recorded.
