Rep. Ethan Lawson, chair of the House Roads and Transportation Committee, announced the committee would remove Senate Bill 167 from the calendar, effectively killing the measure for this session. Lawson said negotiations had been "one-sided" and that Marion County had been the primary actor in late-stage talks.
Lawson said he had asked both sides to reach a compromise but found the result unsatisfactory and therefore would not move SB167 forward. "I'm removing it from the calendar, killing the bill," Lawson said, and urged stakeholders to continue negotiations through the existing process.
Lawson noted that three variances had been granted in the past year, including one involving an interested party tied to the industry that sought the legislation, and said a local liaison effort by the city had helped industry navigate the existing process. He described the decision as a way to preserve time in the short session while encouraging further talks.
The chair asked those who had signed up to testify on SB167 to stand down in light of the removal. The committee registered no objection to Lawson's action and did not take additional formal action on SB167 during the meeting.
The committee then moved on to consider Senate Bill 179. The meeting adjourned after final action on that bill.
