The House Roads and Transportation Committee advanced House Concurrent Resolution 10 on a unanimous voice and roll-call vote to rename a segment of State Road 558 the “Commodore Crane Highway.” Representative Chris May introduced the resolution and invited local supporters to speak in favor.
Kent Parisian, a board member of the Westgate Authority and the Crane Regional Defense Group, told the committee that Naval Support Activity Crane “is not just a military installation. It is the backbone of our community, a cornerstone of our regional economy, and one of the most important national defense assets in the state of Indiana and the United States of America.” He said thousands of local residents depend on Crane for work and that visible recognition would signal state support for the base.
Committee members praised Crane’s role in the region’s economy and cited the naming as a symbolic way to acknowledge service members and civilian staff who work at the installation. Representative Dave Heiney moved the resolution, and the committee recorded an 11-0 vote to pass it out of committee.
Because the item is a concurrent resolution addressing a ceremonial naming, the committee took no further procedural action beyond the committee vote. The resolution will be reported out of committee to the full House as the next step in the legislative process.
