Senate committee consolidates vandalism statutes into single recodified offense

The Senate Corrections and Criminal Law Committee moved a recodification bill Thursday that combines scattered criminal-vandalism statutes into a single organized section and applies existing value-based tiers to grade offenses.
Senator Young, sponsor of the measure, told the committee the rewrite reduces duplication across the code and aligns penalty classes with existing monetary thresholds. He described prior work consolidating fraud, deception and nuisance statutes and said the vandalism recodification follows the same model.
The committee accepted two consent amendments that adjust definitions related to foreclosure-related property and preserve one misdemeanor class for minor cave littering. After brief discussion the committee moved the bill as amended and approved it on a 7-1 roll call.
The sponsor said he would continue work with interested members on any technical cleanup before second reading.
Action: Recodification bill advanced by committee (vote 7-1).
