Johnny Van Calista, pastor associate at Saint John, told the board the parish expects about 150 participants for a Good Friday procession planned April 3 from 5 to 6:30 p.m., starting and ending in the school parking lot and following a short route on South Third and Monroe streets. He also requested a Sunday procession on March 22, planned for noon to 1:30 p.m.
Board members discussed limited barricade placement at key intersections for safety. The street commissioner recommended barricades at Third and Madison, Third and Monroe, and Monroe and Main; Van Calista said parish staff would help manage traffic during the moving procession. "We usually have staff members of the parish controlling or stopping any vehicles that would come our way," Van Calista said.
A board member moved to approve both permits as shown on the submitted maps; the board voted unanimously in favor. The chair said the city will provide barricades at the identified locations to keep pedestrians and motorists separated during the short stops.
