Danbury Board of Awards unanimously approves seven procurement actions, including new generator contractor

The Danbury City Board of Awards met Aug. 19 and unanimously approved seven procurement actions covering school and municipal facilities, public-safety services and technology purchases. Chair Cheick Volpe opened the meeting at 10:06 a.m. and introduced staff and department heads in attendance.
The board approved a $4,050 purchase order to McKinney Mechanical for boiler-section repairs at the magnet school, and awarded a $19,289 contract to BMP Construction for replacement of a collapsing spline ceiling at Broadview School under the Capital Region Council of Governments (CRCOG) construction contract. Volpe noted safety and prior unsuccessful repairs as the rationale for the ceiling replacement.
For generator preventive maintenance serving the fire and public buildings departments, the board reviewed five bids and discussed prior performance problems with the incumbent, Tri State Generator. Volpe and other members said the incumbent had been placed on notice for performance issues; after comparing bids (including Tower Generator, which did not bid on two fire locations), the board awarded the contract to A & J Generator based on bid completeness and lower time-and-material rates.
The board renewed a maintenance contract for pressure-reducing and check valves with Harper Haines Fluid Control (prior contract expired June 30, 2024) on the vendor’s offer to hold prices through June 30, 2025. For treated road salt purchased through CRCOG, the board rejected an unfamiliar low bidder (Chemical Equipment Labs, product “Meltemore”) in favor of Morton Salt at $93.65 per ton delivered, citing public-safety considerations and incumbency; the board noted that the town of Trumbull will pilot the new supplier.
The board also approved an extension of FirstNet cellular and mobile-data-terminal service with AT&T Mobility under the Sourcewell cooperative contract for fiscal year 2024–25. Frank Gentile reported current modem counts and monthly costs by department (EMS: 15 modems, $600.44/month; Fire: 2 modems, $79.46/month; Police: 100 modems, $3,888.09/month). Finally, the board approved the ARPA-funded purchase of 10 workstations for police and fire dispatch support from GovConnection for $19,880, contingent on the city’s ARPA consultant approval.
All motions were seconded and carried unanimously. The meeting concluded with a unanimous vote to adjourn.
