BMR leaders detail career pathways expansion and accept grants to support programming

District leaders on March 6 outlined an expansion of career pathways at Blackstone-Millville Regional High School and accepted grant funding to support implementation.

Miss Fallis presented the high-school plan, highlighting a DESE Innovative Pathways designation for environmental and life sciences and plans to add advanced manufacturing. She said the pathways are intended "for all students" rather than an honors track and stressed broad access to electives and applied programming.

"This is for all students. This is not an honors track," Miss Fallis said, emphasizing that the pathways improve engagement and provide practical course sequences. She reported strong student interest captured by recent surveys (381 student responses) and noted the district had received a $5,000 PLTW grant for design and modeling and a pending $25,000 civics grant for related curricula.

The committee also approved two grant awards: a $35,000 innovation pathways grant for environmental sciences and a $21,000 work-based learning implementation/resource grant. Superintendent Jason DeFalco described the grants as central to scaling career-readiness work and noted Focus Schools was assisting with national conference travel costs for staff who would present the district's student leadership work.

Why it matters: The grants and pathway designations fund program development, staffing and curricular materials that directly affect course offerings and career-preparedness for students who plan to enter the workforce or pursue further education.

Next steps: Curriculum staff will accept the grants and move to finalize materials and scheduling for implementation in the coming school year. The committee approved travel funding to send staff to the ASCD national conference to present the district’s student leadership and instructional work.
