Public commenters urge better threat-reporting tools and raise staff safety concerns

Two members of the public used the board's comment period to urge operational changes intended to improve student and staff safety.

TJ (union representative) described ongoing personnel and climate concerns at a particular school, saying he was told by staff that temporary measures are becoming permanent and that special education staff had experienced harassment in the first weeks of school. "We can't keep doing this," he said, and told the board the formal on-paper responses sometimes do not reflect the problems staff report in private. The board thanked him for the context and noted the district had communicated with the Professional Standards Board earlier in the summer.

Sharon Gold, an alumnus, staff member and U.S. Army veteran, urged the district to create a quick, easy online threat-reporting form (with an anonymous option) and suggested front-desk phone lines include a threat-report redirect so time-sensitive reports are prioritized. Gold said that in most school shootings someone else had prior knowledge of the plan and failed to report it; she urged easier reporting to ensure timely intervention.

Both speakers framed their recommendations as procedural changes to improve the ability of staff, students and community members to report concerns; the board heard the comments but did not take immediate action during the meeting.

Board leadership thanked both commenters and noted opportunities to follow up through the superintendent's office.
