Board honors Students of the Month, staff awardees and says farewell to Director Vildan Kirby

The Lake Stevens School District Board of Directors opened its Nov. 12 meeting by recognizing students and staff from across the district and by acknowledging board members completing their service.
Principals from multiple schools introduced October Students of the Month: Lake Stevens Middle School honored Abigail Gorhum, Iris Xiong, Oakley Burns and Aadya Yarlagadda; North Lake Middle School recognized Justin Souder, Henry Wagner, Sofia Olson and Emmanuel Udo‑Imeh; Cavelero Mid‑High School named Mason Allard (unable to attend), Shaylin Cross, Areen Elhassadi and Leah Rubi; and Lake Stevens High School recognized Olivia Matheson, Lucas Sizemore (unable to attend), Tyrel Bates/Brayden Slezak, Tessa Anastasi (unable to attend) and Malik Parker. Assistant Superintendent John Balmer introduced APPLE Award recipients Tami Arnsbarger, Brady Dykgraaf, Savannah Johnson, Joanna Leslie and Kjerstine Loftus; SACo President Aashi Bendalam presented a SACo Award to custodian Jennifer Reynolds.
During her superintendent’s update, Dr. Mary Templeton thanked Directors Nina Hanson and Vildan Kirby for leadership contributions during recent major initiatives including the district strategic plan and a successful bond campaign. Templeton said student voice and the Student Advisory Council were strengthened under their leadership.
Director Kirby offered a farewell reflection on four years of service, describing the role as “the most rewarding experience of her life,” thanking colleagues and encouraging students that they belong and can succeed academically. She closed with a lighthearted note that she will “always serve Turkish tea.”
SACo officers also thanked award winners and praised the HOMELink and Early Learning Center presentations. President Taylor closed the meeting by thanking attendees and adjourned the session.
